Star Trek into Darkness: An Honest Review

As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, I am a HUGE trekkie/trekker.

Pretty much any night I'm free I'll end up watching an episode of Star Trek, so of course when I found out that J.J.Abrams is making a sequel to Star Trek 2009 I went crazy. Basically when the news came out in August of 2012 that J.J.Abrams was making a sequel I spent the remainder of my summer trying to find some insight on what the movie was going to be like.

Fast forward to May 17, 2013 my reaction follow a sereis of events:
  1. Right after watching the movie I was like "OMG SPOCK AND KIRK SO MANY REFERENCES TO THE ORIGINAL SERIES MIND BLOW" and so on...
  2. After the shock had worn off: Wait a sec, how come the Klingons looked so weird?
  3. Two hours after the shock had worn off: WORF DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THAT!!!
  4. The next day: Why and earth would they make Chekov a redshirt? What were they thinking?
  5. A week later: Star Trek into Darkness sucked...
  6. Today: Well... I guess the movie wasn't too bad...
Unfortunately I have to say that Star Trek into Darkness was a bit of a disappointment for trekkies. The reason I emphasize for trekkies is because I'm pretty sure the people who don't really know much about the original series would enjoy this movie more than a person who knows Trek like the back of their hand.

First of all, the storyline moved way too fast. Anytime their was an emotional moment something just had to blow up. If J.J.Abrams were to just linger on those moments for just a little longer the film would have been ten times better

Also, Klingons do not look like this:

Klingons do not wear masks. Wearing masks indicates cowardice and fear of showing a person's true identity. And if I have learned about the Klingon is that they do not stand for fear or cowardice. Also, the role of the klingons was kept way to brief for the plot of the film.

And of course there was the Carol Markus and Kirk scene. I'm sorry, but seriously was the heck was the point of that scene? It was just random and uncomfortable and made absolutely no sense.

But one of the biggest mistakes the director made was that everyone other than Kirk and Spock had about two seconds of screen time. Chekov had no part, the only thing Sulu did was take command of the Enterprise for a few hours, and Uhura just whined about her relationship with Spock.

However there were some elements that I did like such as Kirk/Spock role play switch, and some of the special effect and stunts were amazing.

At the end of the day Star Trek into Darkness isn't a Star Trek movie. It is purely an action movie jam packed with five movies worth of explosions. Visually the film is great, but plot wise it is terribly disappointing.

Anyways, I wonder when they are going to reboot the next generation? That would be totally awesome! Plus they do deserve a better ending then Nemesis.

Just don't get J.J.Abrams to direct it...

  1. Lately it seems like all films are like what you described (good visuals, lacking in details and such). But that's what appeals to the public nowadays. Where did our generation go wrong? /rubsforeheadtwice
Liked your review though, was interesting. We should play Star Trek Online sometime hurhurhur
